How this Period & Menstrual Cycle Calculator works
Enter the first day of your last period, your average cycle length (days from period to period), and how long you usually bleed. We calculate your current cycle day, assign your menstrual cycle phase, and build an important dates table showing each upcoming period window and most probable ovulation days (±2 days) for the next 3, 6, or 12 cycles.
Ovulation is estimated about 14 days before each predicted next period—the same rule used in clinical period calendars. Results include next-period date, cycle progress, phase timeline, screening insights, recommendations, and PDF export. For fertile-window scoring and conception probability, use our Fertility & Ovulation Calculator.
Calendar prediction works best when cycles are relatively regular—log at least three consecutive cycles to confirm your personal pattern. Discuss persistent irregularity, heavy bleeding, or missed periods with a licensed clinician.
Period & Menstrual Cycle Calculator – Next Period Date & Cycle Tracker
Your menstrual cycle is more than a monthly event—it is a vital sign of reproductive and overall health. A period calculator and menstrual cycle tracker helps you predict when your next period will start, understand which phase you are in today, and plan ahead with a clear calendar of upcoming bleeding and ovulation windows. Enter your last period start date, average cycle length, and period duration to see cycle day, phase breakdown, most probable ovulation days, screening insights, and PDF export for your records or clinician visits.
What is Menstrual Cycle Tracking?
Menstrual cycle tracking means recording the first day of each period and noting cycle length over time to predict future bleeding dates, understand hormonal phases, and spot changes early. Unlike fertility-only tools that focus on conception timing, this calculator emphasizes period prediction, cycle day awareness, and a multi-month view of important dates—similar to the period calendars used in clinical handouts and popular cycle apps.
1What You Enter
Cycle dates
- First day of last period (day 1 of bleeding)
- Average cycle length (21–45 days)
- Average period duration (2–8 days)
Display options
- Prediction range: 3, 6, or 12 upcoming cycles
- Period windows in short date format
- Most probable ovulation days (±2 days)
2How We Calculate
Step 1 — Current cycle day
Cycle day = days since last period start + 1
Day 1 is always the first day of full menstrual bleeding—not light spotting beforehand.
Step 2 — Next period & future cycles
Next period start ≈ last period start + cycle length
Each future cycle adds the same interval. Period end = start + duration − 1 day.
Step 3 — Most probable ovulation window
Ovulation ≈ next period start − 14 days (±2 days)
The luteal phase is typically ~14 days. We show a 5-day "most probable ovulation" window centered on that estimate—matching standard period-calendar formats.
Step 4 — Cycle phase assignment
Menstrual, follicular, ovulation, and luteal phases are mapped to calendar dates for your current cycle with a progress indicator.
3What Your Results Include
- Next period date and days remaining (or overdue status)
- Current cycle day, phase, and cycle progress bar
- Important dates table: Period | Most Probable Ovulation Days
- Phase timeline with start/end dates for all four cycle phases
- Cycle statistics (follicular length, luteal length, days to ovulation)
- Screening insights, phase tips, recommendations, and PDF export
Normal Menstrual Cycle Lengths
| Cycle length | Classification | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 21–23 days | Short | May be normal if consistent; discuss if new |
| 24–32 days | Regular (typical) | Average ~28 days; best for calendar prediction |
| 33–35 days | Longer but often normal | Ovulation occurs later (e.g., day 19–21) |
| > 35 days | Irregular / oligomenorrhea | Consider PCOS, thyroid, or other evaluation |
The Four Menstrual Cycle Phases
| Phase | Typical timing | Hormones | Common experiences |
|---|---|---|---|
| Menstrual | Days 1–5 (varies) | Estrogen & progesterone low | Bleeding, cramps, fatigue |
| Follicular | After bleeding until ovulation | Estrogen rises | Energy may increase; clearer skin for some |
| Ovulation | ~14 days before next period | LH surge; estrogen peak | Mid-cycle pain, stretchy cervical mucus |
| Luteal | After ovulation until next period | Progesterone rises | PMS, bloating, mood shifts, breast tenderness |
Sample Period Calendar (28-Day Cycle, 5-Day Period)
If your last period started May 1 with a 28-day cycle and 5-day bleeding, your calculator results would look like this:
| Period | Most Probable Ovulation Days |
|---|---|
| May. 1 – May. 5 | May. 13 – May. 17 |
| May. 29 – Jun. 2 | Jun. 10 – Jun. 14 |
| Jun. 26 – Jun. 30 | Jul. 8 – Jul. 12 |
| Jul. 24 – Jul. 28 | Aug. 5 – Aug. 9 |
| Aug. 21 – Aug. 25 | Sep. 2 – Sep. 6 |
| Sep. 18 – Sep. 22 | Sep. 30 – Oct. 4 |
Factors That Influence Your Cycle
| Factor | Effect on cycle | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Stress | Can delay ovulation and shorten or lengthen cycles | Sleep, mindfulness, and stress-load awareness |
| Weight change | Low or high BMI may cause missed or irregular periods | Gradual, balanced nutrition; discuss with clinician |
| Intense exercise | May suppress ovulation in some athletes | Ensure adequate calories and recovery |
| Hormonal contraception | Regulates or suppresses natural cycles | Calendar tools work best off hormonal birth control |
| PCOS / thyroid disease | Irregular or absent ovulation; unpredictable periods | Use our PCOS and thyroid screening tools; see a clinician |
| Perimenopause | Cycles shorten, lengthen, or skip unpredictably | Track patterns; discuss symptoms with gynecologist |

Common Period Tracking Mistakes
1. Counting spotting as day 1
Light brown spotting before full flow is not cycle day 1—wait for the first day of proper bleeding to avoid shifting all predictions.
2. Using only one cycle length
A single month's length can mislead. Average at least 3 cycles when your periods are fairly regular.
3. Expecting exact ovulation dates
Calendar ovulation is an estimate. Actual ovulation can vary by several days—even in regular cycles.
4. Ignoring persistent irregularity
A calculator cannot diagnose PCOS, thyroid disease, or pregnancy. Seek evaluation for cycles consistently outside 21–35 days or absent periods.
When to See a Clinician
Cycle pattern concerns
Cycles shorter than 21 days, longer than 35 days, or varying by more than 7 days between months—especially if new or worsening.
Bleeding red flags
Soaking through hourly, bleeding longer than 7 days, bleeding between periods, after sex, or after menopause.
Missed periods
No period for 3+ months when pregnancy is ruled out—evaluate for PCOS, thyroid disease, hyperprolactinemia, or menopause.
Severe symptoms
Debilitating cramps, fainting, fever with pelvic pain, or PMS that severely disrupts daily life (possible PMDD).
PMS vs. PMDD
PMS
Mild to moderate bloating, mood changes, breast tenderness, and cravings in the week before bleeding. Symptoms resolve within a few days of period start. Lifestyle measures often help.
PMDD
Severe depression, anxiety, or irritability in the luteal phase that significantly impairs work, relationships, or daily function. Requires clinical diagnosis and may need medication or therapy.
The Science Behind Menstrual Cycle Prediction
The menstrual cycle is coordinated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis. Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) drive follicle growth and ovulation; estrogen and progesterone shape the uterine lining. Calendar methods assume a relatively stable luteal phase of about 14 days, so ovulation shifts earlier or later as total cycle length changes. A 32-day cycle often ovulates around day 18; a 26-day cycle around day 12.
The "most probable ovulation days" window (±2 days around the estimated ovulation date) reflects natural biological variation and matches the format used in patient education materials worldwide. Modern apps improve accuracy by learning from multiple logged cycles; this calculator is a strong starting point for regular cycles but cannot replace ultrasound, hormone testing, or clinical evaluation when patterns are unpredictable.
